about

The Start of Sweet Tooth

Having worked in the hotel industry for many years, Chef Stephen Thomas understood the importance of cultivating a positive experience for his customers. During his many years in the hospitality environment, his personal vision began to develop. He envisioned bringing Halal gourmet desserts to his community; that vision came to fruition in June 1996 when he opened the doors of Sweet Tooth Cakes & Pastries. From that first opening day until today, Sweet Tooth Cakes & Pastries has stood firm as that positive and inviting environment that has kept customers coming back week after week, month after month and year after year.

Expanding to Halal Comfort Foods and Vegan Desserts

In 2011, Chef Thomas, with the support of his wife Sara, opened Sweet Tooth Café. The café offered halal American comfort food, which was lacking in most dining establishments in Prince George’s County. In 2019, Sweet Tooth expanded its services by offering vegan desserts and food. These offerings became instrumental because of his daughter Amina’s inability to enjoy all of the regular delicacies due to her severe allergies. Amina developed the recipes for all of the vegan foods and desserts that are now being served at Sweet Tooth. With the addition of the Café and our vegan selections, we have met our goal of creating delicious sweets and foods for everyone, including, but not limited to, our signature Curry Chicken Salad and White Chocolate Mousse cake.

Our Principles

Serving the community has always been a priority for Sweet Tooth. Catering to underserved groups and areas is at the forefront of their mission. This has led to the latest chapter in the Thomas family’s legacy, the opening of a new location in Anacostia. Anacostia is one of the most underserved communities in Washington, DC’s Southeast quadrant and we are ecstatic to be a part of the revitalization of this community.
